Valladolid, Amsterdam
« Desgarrones » is a show about cars executions.

The show was performed for the first time in Valladolid, Spain, on May 8th 1987 for the opening of the 9th Muestra Internacional de Teatro de Valladolid, and then in Amsterdam (Netherlands) from the 15th to 18th of July for the summer festival (Zomerfestijn) as part of Amsterdam European Capital of Culture. The two performances were attended by an estimated 5,000 spectators.

In the tramway bringing the executioners, a car is turning on a spit and musicians are playing live music in the front car. For the audience, the appointment is simple: 5 minutes between 5pm and 5.05pm on Amsterdam central square. Although the execution is different every day, it comes with the same ritual which is deliberately provocative. The executioners run out and pull up a car. Women fasten their seatbelts and put on full-face helmets while men put on gloves. Then, the car is lifted onto its side, and then rolled to the execution site. Tent pegs are planted in the ground and the car is attached to them. A truck is placed before it and brutally tears off the engine with a cable. Everyone goes back running into the starting tramway. Desgarrones is a Spanish bullfighting term that means tearing.
